São Martinho’s Day
Posted Novembro 11, 2008on:
Today is S. Martinho’s Day. The legend says that on a rainy day, a Roman soldier saw an old man naked and shivering with cold. The roman soldier was a good man, so he cut his cloak in half with his sword and gave one half to the old man. The old man covered himself and thanked the soldier. At that moment the rain stopped and a big sun started to shine.
In Portugal, there is the tradition of eating roasted “castanhas” on this day. All schools commemorate this day reminding S. Martinho’s legend, doing some activities and eat roasted “castanhas”. And we can buy delicious roasted “castanhas” in the streets. What a taste! What a delicious smell!
